Yeezy Sneakers will be made from Algae

It was probably one of the biggest announcement of the month, Kanye West’s new Yeezy shoes are going vegan. The new Yeezy sneakers will be made with a blend of algae and ethylene-vinyl acetate.

An Encouragement towards sustainable fashion

While on stage at the Fast Company Innovation Festival on Thursday, Kanye West shared the new shoe prototype from his Yeezy fashion line, with plans to be even more eco-friendly!
“Eco-concerns are intersecting with what we do,” mentioned Steven Smith, the head designer at Yeezy. “This is just the beginning of the future that Kanye envisioned for us to start working on.”

The brand’s HQ is now on a 4,000-acre ranch in Wyoming, where it will grow crops such as cotton and hemp. The HQ will also include a hydropronic farm. West said, “we’re going to be farming and going seed to sole.”

The prototype pair West showcased on stage at the Fast Company Innovation Festival were a bland khaki color, but Kanye West said the company is looking into environmentally friendly dyes. Regardless of color, though, the design of the sneakers didn’t appeal to everyone, even though the use of eco-friendly materials probably should.

“ We’re getting into how we can have less impact with the dyes because our color is a big signature of the brand,” said West. “But also dyeing is one of the main things that’s impacting the planet in the fashion industry. So just being responsible from A to Z in what happens.”

According to a Thursday tweet from the official Yeezy Twitter account, the shoes are Yeezy Foam Runners, a style first unveiled in September and set for a 2020 release.

The use of eco-friendly materials and processes, brands and designers in the fashion industry also play their part to stop the destruction of our planet, step by step.
