The 10 best air purifiers for every room, budget and allergy in 2026

Smart Home

From a £50 bedside cube to whisper-quiet open-plan powerhouses, these are the air purifiers we’d trust with our lungs this winter.

The windows are shutting for the season, the heating is on, and suddenly everything we usually let drift out of the house (dust, pet dander, cooking smells, the faint whiff of last night’s candle) is trapped inside with us. An air purifier is one of those gadgets you don’t think you need until you’ve lived with one, then you notice the air feels lighter, the sneezing stops and the dog smell stops greeting guests at the door.

We’ve rounded up the 10 we’d actually buy, every one of them rated over 4 stars by Amazon UK shoppers, spanning tiny bedroom units, smart app-controlled models and big-room machines that can turn over a whole open-plan floor. Levoit and Blueair dominate for good reason, but Philips, Winix and Shark all earn their place too.

Our quick picks

  • Best overall: Levoit Core 200S
  • Best budget: Levoit Core Mini
  • Best for bedrooms: Blueair Blue Max 3250i
  • Best for pet homes: Levoit Vital Pet Pro
  • Best for big rooms: Levoit Core 600S

Small rooms, small prices

You don’t need to spend big to make a real difference in a bedroom, nursery or home office. These three cover small to medium rooms for under £75.

Levoit Core Mini

Small enough to sit on a bedside table without dominating it, the Core Mini covers rooms up to 34m² with a three-layer filter that catches dust, dander, pollen and lingering smells. It’s the purifier we’d give a friend with hay fever and a box room, or anyone curious whether an air purifier is worth it before committing to something bigger. There’s no app and no air quality sensor, but at this price that’s fair, and it’s quiet enough to leave running overnight.

Levoit Core 200S

Our pick for most people, and frankly a bit of a bargain. The Core 200S handles rooms up to 64m², almost double the Mini, and adds smart controls through the VeSync app plus Alexa and Google Assistant support, so you can schedule it to run before bed or check when the filter needs swapping from the sofa. The sleep mode is genuinely hushed, and there’s a soft night light for those who like one.

It doesn’t have an automatic air quality sensor, so it won’t ramp up on its own when you burn the toast. For a bedroom or living room under 64m², though, nothing else this price comes close.

Blueair Blue Pure 511

Blueair’s smallest Blue Pure looks more like a Scandi homeware piece than an appliance, with a fabric pre-filter wrap that comes in different colours and can go in the wash. It covers rooms up to 42.2m² and drops to 24dB on its lowest setting, quieter than a whisper and easy to sleep beside. At under 2kg it’s light enough to carry from the bedroom to the study as your day moves around.

How to choose the right air purifier

Look at CADR, not just room size CADR (clean air delivery rate) tells you how much filtered air a purifier pushes out per hour. Higher is faster. Maximum room sizes on the box are often generous, so if you want the air properly refreshed several times an hour, pick a model rated for a room around a third bigger than yours.

Check the filter cost before you buy Replacement filters are the hidden running cost. Most need swapping every six to twelve months, at anything from £20 to £70 a time. Factor that in, or look at long-life filters like Shark’s NeverChange range.

Placement matters Keep your purifier at least 30cm from walls and furniture so it can draw air freely, and away from the corner behind the sofa. In a bedroom, closer to the bed is better than across the room.

Want it to look after itself? Get a sensor Models with an air quality sensor and auto mode will ramp up when you cook, vacuum or light a candle, then quieten down. It’s the single feature that makes a purifier feel set-and-forget.

Quiet, clever and low-maintenance

For bedrooms, nurseries and anyone who hates fiddling with gadgets, these three focus on near-silent running, smart features and filters that don’t need constant attention.

Blueair Blue Max 3250i

The Blue Max 3250i is the one we’d put in our own bedroom. On its lowest setting it runs at just 18dB, which is about as quiet as a rustle of leaves, so light sleepers won’t even notice it’s on. Turn it up and it can clean a 48m² room in 30 minutes, while an activated carbon layer tackles cooking smells and VOCs from paint or new furniture.

Wi-Fi and app control let you check air quality and set schedules, and the 360-degree design means it doesn’t need to sit in a particular spot. It’s a properly considered piece of kit for the price.

Philips Air Purifier 900 Series

If allergies are the main reason you’re shopping, the Philips 900 Series is the reassuring choice. It’s certified for allergy sufferers by ECARF, the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation, and its three-layer HEPA filter captures pollen, dust mites and pet dander down to tiny particle sizes. With a CADR of 250m³/h it can turn over the air in a 20m² bedroom in under 12 minutes, and it covers rooms up to 65m².

It sips just 23W on full power, so running it all day won’t haunt your energy bill. Clean, quiet and properly trustworthy.

Shark NeverChange5 Air Purifier

The headline here is the filter: Shark says it can last up to five years before it needs replacing, which takes the most annoying (and expensive) part of owning an air purifier almost entirely off your to-do list. The four-layer filtration traps dust, pollen and pet dander, with an anti-odour layer for kitchen smells, and the LED display shows air quality at a glance.

The catch is coverage. It’s rated for rooms around 23m², so it’s best suited to bedrooms and home offices rather than open-plan living spaces. If you want something you can genuinely set up and forget, though, it’s in a class of its own.

Pets, pollen and the whole open-plan floor

Big spaces, furry housemates and serious hay fever call for serious airflow. These four are built to cope with all three.

Levoit Vital Pet Pro

Designed specifically for homes with cats and dogs, the Vital Pet Pro tackles the three things pet owners care about most: hair, dander and smell. A washable pre-filter catches fur before it clogs the HEPA layer, the carbon filter goes after odours, and built-in PM2.5 and VOC sensors mean it ramps up automatically when the dog comes in from the rain. It covers up to 102m², enough for most living rooms and kitchen-diners.

At over 5kg it’s not one you’ll carry from room to room, but it doesn’t need to be. Our pick for pet homes.

Winix 5500-2

A long-standing favourite with Amazon shoppers, and it’s easy to see why. With a CADR of 390m³/h, the 5500-2 covers rooms up to 99m² and comes with a smart sensor and auto mode that adjusts fan speed as air quality changes. It’s frugal too, drawing just 3W in sleep mode and 23W at full tilt, and runs at 27.4dB when you’re asleep.

It isn’t the prettiest purifier here and there’s no app, but as a reliable workhorse for a family living room, it’s very hard to beat.

Philips Air Purifier 2200 Series

Philips calls the 2200 Series its quietest purifier yet, and it shows. Owl-inspired SilentWings fan blades let it run as low as 13dB on its quietest setting, practically silent, which is remarkable for a machine that can also cover up to 109m². With a CADR of 420m³/h, it clears a 20m² room in under eight minutes.

It’s the purifier we’d choose for a large open-plan space that doubles as somewhere to relax, where a droning fan would spoil the mood. A premium price, but a premium experience.

Levoit Core 600S

The big one. With a CADR of 697m³/h, the Core 600S can cover rooms up to 294m², so a large open-plan ground floor or loft conversion is well within reach. Levoit says it can purify close to 300m² in an hour, and PM2.5 monitoring with auto mode means it works harder only when it needs to. Smart controls through the VeSync app and voice assistants come as standard.

At 6.2kg and around 60cm tall it needs a proper spot of its own, and it’s overkill for a bedroom. But if you want one purifier to handle a whole floor, this is it.

How to keep your air purifier working at its best

Vacuum the pre-filter monthly The outer pre-filter catches hair and big dust particles before they reach the HEPA layer. A quick going-over with the vacuum every few weeks keeps airflow strong and makes the main filter last longer.

Run it all the time Purifiers work best running continuously on a low setting rather than in short blasts. Most modern models use less power than a lightbulb on low, so it barely touches your bills.

Close the door A purifier can only clean the air it can reach. Shutting the bedroom door an hour before bed lets it properly clean that room rather than trying to tackle the whole house.

Buy genuine filters Cheap third-party filters can fit poorly and let air leak around the edges, which undoes the whole point. Stick to the brand’s own replacements where you can.

Whichever you pick, an air purifier is one of the quietest upgrades you can make to your home, and one of the most noticeable. Close the windows, switch it on, and enjoy breathing a little easier this winter.
